Always purchase good quality, fresh flowers. Select flowers in bud rather than fully open, unless you need them to be open.
Once you get the flowers home, re-cut the stems and plunge into fresh, cold
water. Allow them to drink for at least one hour prior to arranging.
Invest in a good pair of florists scissors and/or a knife to avoid crushing
the stems when cutting.
Always cut stems on a diagonal to expose the maximum surface area to take
up water. Make a clean cut to avoid damaging the stems.
Remove all leaves that will appear below the water level of your vase, otherwise
they will pollute the water and look unsightly.
Work in odd numbers eg 3, 5, 7 of each type of flower. Use this as a guide
when selecting and arranging your flowers.
If you cannot decide what combination of flowers to use, just purchase one
type of flower in bulk. This never fails to look fantastic!
Combining the vase with the flowers is very important. Colour, form and height
of the vase will determine what flowers you can use in it. To avoid indecision
on what flowers to buy, determine what vase you will be using prior to purchasing
the flowers. This will save you a lot of time!!
Keep the water topped up daily and change the water every second day. This
will keep the flowers in the best possible condition. Add a drop of household
bleach to the water to maintain hygiene in the vase.
Keep flowers out of direct sunlight and ensure the room is well ventilated,
especially in the summer months, to prolong the life of the flowers
